The 17th Congress of Russian Surgeons was held in Moscow from October 12 to 14, 2026. The Congress was opened by Academician Alexei Vasilievich Shabunin, President of the Association of Surgeons of Russia and General Director of Botkin Hospital Moscow.
“Surgery is The Cosmos” – Innovations that Change Medicine
This fascinating scientific gathering, symbolically named “Surgery is the Cosmos”, brought together over 4,000 registered participants from all over the world. The congress provided a comprehensive insight into cutting-edge innovations in three key areas:
- Elective surgery
- Emergency surgery
- War surgery
Among numerous technological achievements, the greatest attention was the presentation of a new Russian robotic system, which was designed to be a direct competitor to the globally known Da Vinci system.
SSES Academician Shabunin awarded as SSES Honorary Member
During the ceremonial part of the Congress, the president of SSES prof. Dr. Krstina Dokleštić Vasiljev had the special honor of presenting Academician Aleksej Shabunin with a plaque of honorary membership of the Serbian Society of Emergency Surgery. Academician Shabunin received this prestigious award from our association with great respect and sincere joy, which further strengthened the professional and friendly ties between the Serbian and Russian surgical communities.
Visit to Botkin Hospital: Top World Standards
As honored guests of the Congress, delegations from Serbia, China, India, Turkey and Vietnam had the opportunity to visit the Botkin Hospital – a medical giant that, with over 33 clinics, rightly bears the epithet of the leader of the Moscow health system. While the organization of the work of the hospital itself is successfully carried out under the leadership of prof. Dimitrija Grekova, the entire visionary system of work and technological improvements that launch this institution to the very top of world medicine are the work of Academician Shabunin.
The new Emergency Center of the Botkin Hospital left a special impression on our delegation. This center represents the most modern, fully digitized European facility for the diagnosis and care of emergency medical conditions, and is characterized by fascinating operating protocols:
Smart triage: Patient triage begins in the ambulance, from where all data is digitally sent to the Emergency Center. At the very entrance, the patient receives a bracelet with a QR code containing all the information.
Zone system: Work is organized through three strictly divided zones – green, yellow and red, depending on the urgency of the situation.
Impressive capacity: The center has its own operating block of 9 state-of-the-art theaters, including a high-tech hybrid operating theater, with fully integrated diagnostics and interventional methods.
This visit and participation in the congress opened new doors for knowledge exchange, education and implementation of the most modern digital protocols in the field of emergency surgery in Serbia.
